Description

Vice Admiral Don Hagen, USN Retired, 31st Surgeon General of the US Navy – February Luncheon Speaker

Tuesday, 18 February 2020

One of the many benefits of being a Chapter Member is associating with others who not only share our values and experience, but with some who have served in the highest levels of the Armed Forces.  Our February MOACC luncheon speaker is chapter member and the 31st Surgeon General of the Navy, Vice Admiral Donald Hagen (Retired).  As a junior officer, VADM Hagen served three tours of duty in Viet Nam, with 3rd Battalion 3rd Marines at Chu Lai, aboard the hospital ship USS Repose, and with the Naval Riverine Assault Forces in the Mekong Delta.   After surgical residency training, he served in Pensacola, FL, Yokosuka, Japan, and at NAS Jacksonville, FL, before heading the contingency planning division for Navy Medicine in Washington DC.  VADM Hagen will speak about his journey from the jungles of Vietnam to the Pentagon.

VADM Hagen was selected to flag rank after commanding the Naval Hospital, Camp Pendleton, and then he returned to the Surgeon General’s office in the Pentagon.  He later served as the Commander, National Naval Medical Center at Bethesda, MD prior to being appointed as the 31st Surgeon General of the Navy in 1991.  After retiring from the Navy, he became the Executive Vice Chancellor, University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, KS, responsible for oversight of the Medical School, School of Nursing, School of Allied Health and the University of Kansas Hospital.   His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (3), Bronze star with Combat “V”, and Combat Action Ribbon.  Of note, the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States presents the Donald F. Hagen Award in his honor to an outstanding young military physician serving in the Armed Forces each year.

VADM Hagen and his wife, Karen moved to Viera, Florida in 2005.  They live in Heritage Isle.  Karen served as a Navy Nurse until the family moved to Japan in 1974.  She actively supported Navy and Marine Corps families throughout her career and was awarded the Secretary of the Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award upon her retirement.  In addition to both Hagens being MOAACC members, they are also life members of MOAA.

Join us as we welcome VADM Hagen as our February Speaker.  The luncheon is Tuesday, 18 February 2020.  Please arrive by 1130 for check-in and seating.  The Call-To-Order is promptly at 12 noon, with the presentation beginning at 1225.  Reservations are required NLT Thursday, 13 February.  The cost is $18 per person – see the menu choices and details on page 16.  For your convenience you may pay on-line or at the door with cash, check, or credit card.  You may use the form on the back of The Intercom, by contacting Mary McIntyre at 321-254-6997, by emailing her at mmcintyreluncheon@gmail.com, or you may make your reservation and pay with your credit card online at www.moaacc.org.  Don’t miss this special MOAACC event!
