Description

July “Bring Your Own Coffee & Donuts to Learn” Speaker –

LT Malcom E. (Mac) Baird, Lieutenant, United States Navy (Retired)

Life in the Submarine Force – Thursday, 23 July 2020

Many of us have seen blockbuster movies such as “The Hunt for the Red October” or “The Boat” and wondered what it would be like to serve in the “Silent Service”.  Mac Baird has been there and done that. Our speaker for the July’s “Bring your Own Coffee and Donuts to Learn” series is LT Mac Baird, US Navy Retired.  Mac served in the submarine program.  He requested submarine duty because during his junior summer in high school in 1965, he participated in a two-month internship at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, NH, and was extremely impressed with the submarine technology he observed and the technical training of the submarine crews. Coincidently, 1965 was the first year of Star Trek on TV, and he noticed some similarities.

Following his enlistment in the Navy, Mac received 15 months of intensive training at the US Naval Guided Missile School, Dam Neck, VA, graduating as a Polaris Fire Control Technician Ballistics and was responsible for the operation and maintenance of the submarine Missile Control Center computers that program and launch the missiles.  His service included assignments in Spain, Groton CT, and the Naval Test Ordinance Unit at Port Canaveral.  Mac later attended Officer Candidate School and served on submarines, ship and shore duty stations.  He holds a BS in Mathematics and Science from Rollins College, and an MS in Management from Florida Tech.  Following his Navy service, he was a Manager with Computer Sciences Raytheon, an advisor with Merrill Lynch, and taught Project Management at Brevard Community College.  He is currently a member of our chapter’s Speakers Bureau and the Veterans Back to Class Program.  If you would like a “101-level introductory course” on submarines prior to or after the presentation, Mac recommends visiting http://rickcampbellauthor.com/styled/index.html.

Join us virtually using Zoom VTC as we welcome Mac as our July speaker on Thursday, 23 July at 0930, immediately following an abbreviated TMBC.   If you haven’t registered for a previous virtual TMBC, “click” on the events calendar link on our website to register to receive the joining instructions for the event.  Don’t miss this special MOAACC event!
