Description
Brig. Gen. Joseph D. “Don” Mirth was born in Flint, MI but grew up in Chicago, IL.
He received his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Oklahoma State University in 1959.
Command Pilot with 3500 flying hours and was the 63rd person to fly the F-15 fighter. Vietnam veteran.
General Mirth was inducted into the Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame in August of 2018. He is a veteran of over 200 space and missile launches.
General Mirth began his Space career in 1959 working on this nation’s first military satellite systems. For the next 11 years he had ever increasing responsibilities for the management, development, acceptance and launch of this nations highly classified, highest priority reconnaissance and warning satellites.
He could never talk about these programs because of the security classification. After 50 years in the “Black” some of the programs were finally declassified in 2011. Today he will be talking about those programs and their impact on this nation’s security.
General Mirth’s last Air Force assignment was as the DOD Program Director for the Space Shuttle program. He had program management responsibility for the construction and activation of the Space Shuttle launch site on the west coast. In addition, he managed the development of two new space control centers and all space boosters and upper stages that the Air Force had. He retired from the Air Force in 1982.
After retirement from the Air Force he became the Program Manager for the Joint Stars radar, then the VP and director of the Space Flight Systems Division of United Technologies Corp.
His last assignment was as the VP and Director of Florida Operations for USBI Co., the 4th largest Space Shuttle contractor at Kennedy Space Center.
He was a Junior Achievement volunteer teacher in the Brevard County schools for 26 years and was the outstanding volunteer teacher for East Central Florida in 2006.
He and his wife, Alice, have lived in Suntree for the last 26 years.
