WINTER SOLDIERS CALL TO ACTION: MOAACC Joins in a COVID-19 Action Plan to Support First Responders

04/11/2020

MOAACC has co-sponsored and is assisting to initiate a new program in Brevard county which crosses many veteran organizational lines.  It is an effort which seeks to help the Brevard MEDICAL and First Responder Communities (MED/FR) during these challenging times. The initiative is called “Stand With The Winter Soldiers” (WS).  We need your help--details below.

TO VOLUNTEER: Contact Donn Weaver of MOAACC at donnweaver2020@gmail.com (757) 871-6576. Questions welcomed (see details below).

— MISSION:  The WS is a temporary group of veterans and other volunteers not facing underlying medical conditions who will transport food and donated Medical PPE.  WS volunteers will develop a list of restaurants, now open doing Take Out, who seek WS support to deliver to Clinics, Hospital Emergency Room Nursing Staff, EMT facilities, Fire Stations, Police Stations and the BCSO, when and if they need it.  By now you have all seen stories of one-on-one such actions all over the county and country.

— HOSF/MED PPE CONCEPT:  After examining many options, WS decided to partner with the Hospice of St. Francis (HOSF).  WS has also heard of dozens making general use masks at home.  HOSF will be glad to serve as a focal point for such items, as well as, items that meet MED/ PPE requirements.  HOSF has contacts all over the county with all hospitals and medical units including EMT, as well as, others who can use the non cert masks. WS will transport to HOSF, but if you have any PPE materials, here are the HOSF Drop Off Points:

Three (3) drop locations for HOSF PPE and donations:

North:

Hospice of St. Francis Edward M. Poe Care Center ( M-F Hours of 8am-5pm)
1240 Grumman Place
Titusville, FL 32780

Central:

Veteran Memorial Center ( M-F Hours of 9am-11am)
400 S. Sykes Creek Pkwy.
Merritt Island, FL 32952

South:

Hospice of St. Francis (Suntree area – UBS building) ( M-F Hours of 8am-5pm)
6905 N. Wickham Road
Melbourne, FL 32940

— CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS:  Since we have at least three plus weeks left of “Safer at Home” and likely more limited pubic activities, and since surveys have been completed, we plan to launch the call for volunteers on Wednesday, 08 April 2020.  At this time there is a core group of five (5) with coverage in all major sections of the county.  WS will seek many more volunteers.  Volunteers will move items from donors to the MED/First Responder facilities.  In all cases, Volunteer would not enter buildings but do the driving from the donor to the destination.  Plans have been refined to get restaurants who want to contribute to sign up in defined geographical areas and alert the WS POC that meals are available at least 6 hours ahead for pick up and then delivery to those who have signed up in the same area as recipients — hospitals, clinics, Urgent Care , EMT, Fire, Police, etc.  Area WS coordinator will also make those POC’s in MED/FR offices as they are identified and sign up.

— BCSO: Sheriff Ivey has been briefed on WS and we will keep his office up to date on the extent of the missions as they unfold.
